Summer Camps 2011

Keep young minds from "going to mush" -- our Museum educators fully engage your youngsters in our summer camps.  We guarantee a lot of learning wrapped in a bundle of fun!  The Museum building will be closed for renovations so this year's camps will be held at fun places in central Arkansas such as the University of Little Rock!

Computer Movies 8:30 am-12:00 noon Ages 9-15

Computer Movies:   Make a movie!  Students will make a short movie with the guidance of an award winning director, David Weekley, who teaches at University of Arkansas at Little Rock's School of Mass Communication.  As a group you will learn basics of writing and producing a short movie by doing it.

Engineering:  Hands-on fun you have come to expect in Engineering camp!  Robotix, take apart, science challenges will abound.  As an extra, since class is held at UALR, we will be touring real labs where we will see equipment at use, including an electron microscope.

Summer Discoveries:  Your world is different every day in Summer Discoveries camp.  One day may be chemistry, the next day zoology.  This camp is the only camp where you can come for a week, or come for the day.  There will be two sessions, 6-9 years old, and 10 – 13 years old.  For some programs, the groups will be combined.

Children at Play:  This afternoon camp will be light and easy.  We’ll play games, ride the trolley, visit other places in the River Market area.  Come on, it’s summer vacation Mom!!

Jr. Vet:  And what child hasn’t gone through “I want to be a vet” stage?  Meet various museum animals, learn about the responsibility and care it takes to be surrounded by animals.

Criminal Minds:  The Museum CSI team is ready to challenge you to another forensic mystery.  Think you have what it takes to be a Crime Scene Investigator?

Make a snow snake

The Museum of Discovery is open 11am-5pm Tuesday January 11, 2011.  


Yesterday we made snow ice cream. Today, how about a SNOW SNAKE? (thanks to TLC!) 


If you don't have enough snow for a snake, you can do a smaller version and call it a caterpillar!  Decorate it with food coloring (just be careful not to stain your clothes). Send pictures of your snowy creations to kmcmanners@amod.org and we'll post them here!

Speaking of snakes, join us for COLD BLOODE CREATURES on January 27-29; where you can meet cold blooded creatures of all kinds (including snakes). You'll be amazed!

Snow ice cream

The Museum of Discovery is closed today, Monday, January 10, 2011. If you have cabin fever, try this recipe for snow ice cream.

Snow Ice Cream

1 gallon of snow

1 cup of sugar

1 spoon of vanilla extract

2 cups of whole milk

Directions:

Use a clean container to collect clean snow. Add sugar and vanilla, stirring everything to make it even, then pour in milk and continue stirring to make it look like ice cream. Eat it right away!

Future exhibit - your input

The Museum of Discovery is designing a new exhibit that will be unveiled in January 2012. The gallery "Earth Journeys" will include a puzzle that is a map of the Arkansas River. What are some points of interest that you'd like to see? 

As you know, the Museum of Discovery is undergoing renovations (WE ARE STILL OPEN THROUGH APRIL 2, 2011!) that will include all new galleries and exhibits. We can't promise your idea will make it into the final exhibit design but we'd sure like to know your thoughts!  Thanks in advance!!

Exhibits Specialist Brad Jordan

Brad Jordan is developing an exhibit to house the Museum of Discovery's moon rock. He must cut cloth to line the exhibit case, so first he must measure the case, then measure the cloth. He must account for extra cloth to provide a proper drape. Math, people, math!
